The service
What grp fibreglass flat roofing involves
GRP stands for glass-reinforced plastic, more commonly called fibreglass. A GRP roof is built on site by laying glass-fibre matting over a solid deck and saturating it with resin. Once cured, it is finished with a pigmented topcoat that protects the laminate from weather and UV light. The result is one continuous, rigid, waterproof sheet across the whole roof.
Because the roof is formed in place, the main roof surface can be formed without lapped sheet seams or torched edges. Junctions, movement and drainage still need careful specification. With GRP, the edges are finished with pre-formed trims that are bonded into the laminate, so the perimeter becomes part of the same waterproof surface rather than a separate weak spot.
GRP can suit domestic and smaller commercial flat roofs, subject to assessment. Access for maintenance depends on the deck and specified system, and it is a popular choice for new extensions where the roof is visible from upstairs windows.
Who it's for
- Homeowners building a new single-storey extension
- Anyone replacing a tired felt roof on a garage, porch or dormer
- Landlords considering flat-roof repair or replacement options
- Small commercial units with modest flat roof areas
When you need it
- Your existing flat roof is leaking repeatedly in the same areas
- Felt is blistering, cracking or lifting at the edges
- You are building or extending and need a new roof covering
- Water is ponding on the surface and the covering has started to break down
Why use a specialist? Flat roofs fail at details: upstands, edges, outlets and joints. LMB focuses only on GRP and liquid roofing; the survey considers these details before work is specified.
If it's ignored
What waiting really costs
A failing flat roof rarely gets cheaper to fix. Water finds its way in slowly, often long before you notice a stain on the ceiling, and by the time it shows inside the damage has usually spread into the deck below.
Rotting roof deck
Timber decking that stays damp softens and rots. Once that happens, the covering alone can't be replaced; the deck has to come off too.
Internal damage
Stained ceilings, blown plaster, damaged insulation and ruined decoration all add to the bill.
Damp and mould
Trapped moisture can lead to mould growth in the rooms below, especially in extensions and bedrooms under dormers.
Repeated patching costs
Patching an old felt roof each winter means paying again and again for a covering that is already at the end of its life.
Common issues to avoid
- Overlaying new GRP on a damp or rotten deck instead of fixing the substrate first
- Choosing the cheapest quote without asking what laminate weight and topcoat will be used
- Leaving the roof in place for another winter after it has started leaking
- Using a general builder rather than a flat roofing specialist for the laminate work

In detail
GRP Fibreglass Flat Roofing: materials, methods and options
Materials used in a GRP roof
A GRP system is made up of a few key layers. First, a solid, dry deck, usually OSB3 or a similar engineered board, fixed to the joists. Over that sits the laminate: chopped strand glass matting wetted out with polyester resin and rolled to remove air. Finally, a pigmented topcoat is applied to protect the laminate and give the finished colour.
Edges, upstands and drip details are formed with GRP trims that are bonded into the laminate. Where the roof meets a wall, the laminate is turned up the wall to form a waterproof upstand. Outlets and gutters are detailed so water leaves the roof rather than sitting on it.
When GRP is the right choice, and when it isn't
GRP may suit solid decks on extensions, garages, dormers, porches and flat bay roofs. Suitability and any maintenance access depend on the roof and system specification.
On roofs with lots of awkward penetrations, complex shapes, or where an existing covering is sound enough to be overlaid, a liquid roofing system can be the better fit. During the free survey, Liam will look at your roof and recommend whichever system genuinely suits it, rather than pushing one product.
Residential and commercial GRP
On homes, the priority is usually a neat finish, good drainage and a suitable waterproofing system with clear maintenance requirements. On commercial units, the focus shifts towards minimising disruption to the business and detailing around plant, rooflights and outlets. Both are surveyed and quoted individually.

Why a specialist
Why choose a GRP and liquid only roofer
Many roofers offer every type of flat roof covering: felt, rubber, asphalt and fibreglass. LMB deliberately doesn't. We work only with GRP fibreglass and approved liquid roofing systems, because both create a single, seamless waterproof surface with properly specified junctions and details.
That focus shapes every recommendation we make for grp fibreglass flat roofing. We aren't trying to sell you whichever product we happen to stock. We're choosing between two modern systems on the basis of what your roof actually needs: its size, shape, deck condition, drainage, details and how it will be used.
Liam Brinkworth owns and runs the business. Contact Liam to discuss the survey, proposed work and quotation.
LMB holds £5 million public liability insurance. Liquid systems are applied as an approved installer, and installations come with a guarantee of 10 to 20 years depending on the system specified and whether it requires matting.
What affects the price of grp fibreglass flat roofing? The main factors are the roof area, how easy it is to reach, the condition of the existing deck, how many details there are (pipes, vents, rooflights, upstands and outlets), whether the old covering needs stripping, and which system is specified. That is why we never quote a fixed rate. The free survey looks at each of these on your roof, so the written quote reflects the real job and the proposed scope is clear. Any changes should be discussed before additional work is agreed.
Before you call
How to check your flat roof safely
You don't need to climb onto a roof to spot most warning signs. From an upstairs window, the garden or the ground, look for cracked or blistered surfaces, moss or vegetation growing on the roof, water that stays ponded for days after rain, lifted or broken edge trims, and gaps where the roof meets a wall.
Inside, check the ceilings under the flat roof for brown stains, bubbling paint or plaster, and any damp or musty smell. Stains that grow after heavy rain are a clear sign water is getting in, even if you never see a drip.
If you can, take a few photos and note when the problem appears: after every shower, only in heavy rain, or only in wind-driven rain. That detail helps narrow down the cause before the survey and makes your free quote more accurate.
Please don't climb onto or walk on a roof to inspect it. A soft deck can give way, and wet roofs are slippery. Leave that part to us. If water is actively coming in, call us for an emergency call-out rather than waiting.

Questions
GRP Fibreglass Flat Roofing FAQs
How long does a GRP roof last?
+
Installation guarantees are 10–20 years, depending on the system and matting. This is not a prediction of service life; condition and maintenance also matter.
How long will installation take?
+
It depends on the roof size, deck condition and weather. Your written quote will give you a clear timeline for your roof.
Can GRP go over my existing felt roof?
+
Usually the old felt is stripped so the laminate can bond to a clean, dry deck. If the deck is damaged, it is replaced too. The survey will confirm what your roof needs.
Can you lay GRP in the rain?
+
No. Resin needs dry conditions to cure correctly, so work is planned around the weather to protect the quality of the finish.
Can I walk on a GRP roof?
+
Only where the deck and specified finish are suitable and safe access has been arranged. Do not walk on a roof to investigate a leak.
What if my GRP roof starts leaking now?
+
We offer emergency call-outs for active leaks. Call to discuss availability and next steps.
How much will it cost?
+
We're strictly quote-only. Every roof differs in size, access, condition and detailing, so a fixed rate would not reflect the work needed on your property. The survey and written quote are free, so you'll know the exact cost before you commit to anything.
Are you insured?
+
Yes. LMB holds £5 million public liability insurance.
Do you cover my area?
+
We cover Bristol, Bath, Newport, Chepstow, Somerset and Gloucestershire from our base in Crick, near Chepstow. If you're nearby and unsure, call and ask.
